When you are just getting started with your business on the Internet you will need to decide whether you should create your own products or promote other people’s products as an affiliate. I found it extremely difficult to figure out what type of product I could create during my first year, so I decided to learn more about affiliate marketing that year so that I could start making some money right away.

I now believe that this is still the best way to break into the world of online marketing, but that it shouldn’t take a year for you to create something of your own, as it did for me. Once you understand the process of selling information to others on the Internet, you will be able to create products that fill the gaps of what is already available. This assumes that you are interested in marketing information to others on a niche topic or even several topics.

Choosing your niche should be done as quickly as possible. It seems that we all come online with a message we would like to share with others, and soon we realize that there may not be anyone looking for that type of information. We then become caught up in the process of trying to figure out what we know that others will pay to learn about. Instead of going through this for months, determine your niche based on your passions, your experiences, and the market.

Make a list of everything you love. This may include sports, hobbies, animals, travel, writing, wine tasting, scuba diving, and more. Think of it as a list of everything you would want to spend your time doing if you had all the time and money in the world.

Now write down a list of everything you have experience in. This will include your education and training, work experience, and experience you have accumulated by encountering bumps along the road of life, such as an illness. Even if something was an experience you would prefer to forget, write it down for the value it gave you in dealing with it.

Take a look at where something you are passionate about crosses over to something you have experience in. For example, I taught school for almost twenty years, so teaching people how to write was a part of my experience. I also love writing, and wanted to write professionally when I was younger. When I came online I was able to transfer those skills and experience into teaching people how to write articles and eBooks.

Finally, do some research to see where people are spending money in the areas you have chosen. You want to find as many competitors as possible so that you can reach out to the people who are already purchasing products and services in your niche.

Start building a list of people who are interested in learning more from you on this topic. Share information and content with them, as well as your affiliate link for products and services they would benefit from. As they get to know you better and gain trust in your advice, you will make money as an affiliate marketer. Soon they will be telling you exactly what they want, and why the affiliate products do not meet their needs completely. That is the information you will use to create your first product.

Because you are continuing to build your list, you now have a group of people who have told you what they want. When you launch your product to your list, there will be people there who are ready to buy.

Over time you can then decide if you want to continue marketing affiliate products or if you want to focus on just creating your own products. This is entirely up to you. This may seem like a simplified approach to getting started with an online information business, but this is exactly what I and many others have done to become successful on the Internet. You can model your own business after these principles to accelerate your progress.

Marketing experts agree that the best way to make a splash in Internet Marketing today is to create, promote, and sell your own products. However, most aspiring entrepreneurs face several obstacles:

- Lack of time to fully concentrate and focus on innovation.

- Lack of specialized skills to fully develop goals and strategies.

- Lack of money to successfully implement business ideas.

- Lack of supportive networks or mastermind groups.

So what’s the Solution?

The audience of the third “Be the Legend” webinar was treated to a session with Internet veteran Shawn M. Casey. As a former CEO of an Inc. 500 (Fasting growing private companies in America) company, Casey brought considerable corporate and entrepreneurial expertise to the presentation. With $30 million dollars in “digital” sales since 1999, he presented a forceful argument for creating your own information products business.

The Difference Between Success and Failure.

In no uncertain terms, Casey contrasted two formulas right off the bat:

A. The Formula for Failure, i.e.:

“Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.”:

1. Find, create, or acquire a product or service.
2. Find someone to sell it to.

What’s wrong with the above picture? Simple – it only focuses on product creation and sales, while completely ignoring marketing. Shawn strongly advises budding entrepreneurs to investigate and research their target market, and create a marketing plan BEFORE considering what products they will create. Hence:

B. The Formula for Success:

1. Find a hot, HUNGRY target market first.
2. Find out what they already want and are already buying.
3. Sell them more of the SAME.

It’s a tried and true formula that established marketers use to stay on top.

What Defines a Hot Target Market?

Shawn Casey proceeded to list the characteristics of an ideal target market:

• Passionate, irrational, easy to reach and find, hungry
• Interested, motivated, insatiable desire to buy “stuff”
• Have discretionary income, are pre-disposed to purchase, and are proven buyers.
• Addicted, desperate, even obsessed with consumerism.

Marketers, with rare exceptions, should not be in the business of introducing people to new concepts and emerging trends. Casey tells us not to bother “educating” people. Instead, reinforcing existing values will improve your ability to connect with and gain lifelong customers. Shawn says that becoming a full-fledged market educator is the surest road to business failure and bankruptcy.

How to Find a Hot Target Market.

Finding the right target market takes work, so a little head start can go a long way. Shawn suggests that many market segments of interest have exploitable business or vocational attributes. Therefore, consider the following areas of endeavor:

1. Hobbies (e.g. Coin collecting, gardening, camping, fishing, hunting, etc.).
2. Self-improvement (Spirituality, health and wellness, lifestyle trends…).
3. Sports and games (e.g. Golf, tennis, poker, etc.).

New marketers should frequently visit newspaper and magazine stands to check out what people are reading, and zero in on what appears to be most profitable. The best strategy according to Casey is to find a market where “fools” are making money in spite of themselves. It will allow you to “sell in a vacuum” without any real competition.

Market Research 101 – Find the Easy Path!

Business and management schools teach students sophisticated methods of conducting research, many of which are further refined and tested in the corporate world. However, Internet Marketers be aware! People often lie, so surveys are to be used at your peril. Instead, Casey suggests that we immerse ourselves in the market we want to build our business in. Specifically:

• Shop what they shop.
• Buy what they buy.
• Read their books and magazines.
• Online: Participate in forums, visit online chat rooms; join competitors mailing lists.
• Offline: Attend industry trade shows, seminars, live events etc. Network, network, network!

The Case for Information Products.

The strongest arguments in favor of creating your information product business, as practiced by Casey and others include:

1. No physical inventory.
2. Very high profit margins (85-100% for e-books, teleseminars, home study courses, workshops, etc.)
3. Ability to command higher prices and fees as your reputation grows; earning potential unrelated to physical distribution systems for goods.
4. Allows you to tightly control, target prospects and customers. Getting the first sale will always be the toughest, but by nurturing “win-win”
   relationships, you will build an army of repeat buyers.
5. Low refund rate for digital products. Software is more glamorous, but involves many administrative and technical headaches.

Outsourcing and Joint Venture (JV) Opportunities.

Outsourcing, when done properly, can significantly reduce your personal workload and allow you to

focus on the strategic planning and management of your business. Almost anything can be outsourced,
including the creation of your e-books.

Finding joint venture (JV) partners or alliances may be considered “high-level” outsourcing, since you

are leveraging the expertise of an experienced marketer to avoiding learning – and doing – everything
on your own.

Resale Rights and Back-End Marketing.

Owning resale rights to existing works is another alternative to original info-product creation. Done properly, it can supercharge an online marketer’s earnings. Imagine – own all the rights, keep all the sales. However, it can get very confusing for even the most experienced marketer let alone “newbies”.

Private Label Rights (PLR), resale rights, master resale rights, branding rights, etc. Seek competent legal advice if you want to obtain such rights, because laws are different all over the world and you definitely want to avoid being sued for copyright infringements.

Your first (front-end) product is usually a “loss leader”. It generates low profits, but that’s OK, since its main purpose is to get your marketing “foot in the door”. Front-end product marketing is the short-term sacrifice you make in order to acquire customers. The heart of your Internet marketing success will

lie in your back-end offers; i.e., everything you get to sell after acquiring a customer, provided it is related to your target market’s wants. Hitting the customer “sweet spot” with regularity is how beginners evolve into experts.

On Your Marks, Get Set, Go!

Shawn Casey’s start-up suggestion? Create a content-rich, “How to” e-book for a hot target market, because there will always be a demand for topical, relevant information that provides a plan of action. Business success is measured by the Lifetime Customer Value (LVC) of each person who spends time on your subscriber list and sales funnel. LVC is measured by factors like:

• Transactional frequency, i.e. the number of repeat purchases.
• Direct referrals from each customer.
• Bundles sold.
• Sequential purchases made.

The Internet is tailor made for niche marketing. As more and more people turn to the web to find the information and products they need, opportunities for online marketers to cash in has never been greater. Buyers now look to the web to find countless products and services not available in their own local areas.

Niche marketing is a simple marketing technique you should be using with your online marketing. Targeting small sections of the vast online consumer marketplace is one of the fastest and surest ways to produce an online revenue stream. Are you taking full advantage of this marketing strategy with your own site or sites?

The web and niche marketing has opened up this whole new area in the worldwide marketplace; delicately balancing supply with demand, no matter how obscure or unique the product or service may be.

Niche marketing is catering to these small segments of the marketplace, from mountain climbing footwear to fly tying equipment to home entertainment systems. Narrowing down and targeting a specific market niche or group has proven to be a very effective online marketing strategy.

Internet marketers and webmasters who have searched out and optimized for these small niche markets are reaping the rewards. Those marketers who find the niche markets where there is high demand but very little competition are benefiting the most.

Finding these profitable niche markets is easier than most people believe, mainly because most of the activity on the web is keyword driven or powered. All a marketer has to do is find the keywords or phrases potential customers are using to search for the products they want to acquire.

Savvy online marketers use different keyword research software and online sites to find these profitable keywords. They use software like Nichebot or Keyword Elite and sites like WordTracker and Overture (Yahoo Marketing) to find profitable keywords in their respective niches.

Before any content is created, before any sites are made, before any products are born – these marketers do extensive keyword research to find out exactly what people are looking for on the web. How many searches are made each month and the keyword ratio or competition for their niche keywords.

The objective is to find little known niches where there is great demand but very little competition. Many marketers also use the ‘Long Tail’ – a whole long list of keywords or keywords phrases that relate to their niche. Creating webpages or content for this Long Tail has proven to be more profitable then targeting general popular keywords.

For example, someone searching for the keyword ‘vacation’ may just be shopping around or dreaming – whereas someone looking for ‘honeymoon vacation Jamaica’ may have their minds already made up and are ready to buy… finding a whole (Long Tail) list of keyword phrases where the customer is ready to buy will obviously prove more lucrative than a general list of keywords.

Many niche marketers also use this Long Tail keyword list in combination with targeted articles which they submit and syndicate around the web through such sites as Ezinearticles, GoArticles or IdeaMarketers. Thus, creating high search rankings for the profitable keywords in their particular niche.

Many smart marketers also tie in an informative ‘How To’ ‘Further Information’ or ‘Special Deals’ autoresponder series to keep in touch with their visitors. Knowing that many interested parties may not buy on their first visit, it has been shown that it takes around six or seven follow-ups before many consumers will buy.

For those webmasters who are not extensively into web marketing, joining a free affiliate program like the Amazon Associates program and creating an aStore is an effective way of promoting niche products on the topic of your site. Products can be hand-picked to perfectly fit the content of your site or niche.

Niche marketing is not a complicated process. Anyone can take advantage of these small marketing niches and exploit the demand for countless products and services that have no or little competition. There is no reason why you shouldn’t turn the information highway into your own private source of income.
